Buddhismus und Psychotherapie

Wed 7 Jul 2010

Stephan Schneider has translated into German this old favourite from a 1993 seminar in Berlin. Why, having been tortured in one situation, do we go back to the same place to be hurt again, in exactly the same way? I see this repetition a lot in the clinic

Why, having been tortured in one situation, we go back to the same place to be hurt again, in exactly the same way. This is something I see a lot in the clinic and which can be very troubling. How can it be that human beings are so stupid? I think it is because of what Buddhists describe as the operation of attachment, and which psychodynamic therapists or therapists who use a developmental model say is attachment, which operates not only towards good objects but also towards bad objects.  Therefore a very important factor in both psychotherapy and in Buddhist practice is to enquire into the nature of the self that is creating this web of pseudo-security around it, through attachment to a repetition.
