Note on Tibetan Pronunciation
The pronunciation of Tibetan words is difficult to represent simply in English. The final
consonants of many words are not pronounced with their full force and are influenced by
the consonants which immediately follow them. This frequently gives rise to an effect
similar to the glottal stop, as when instead of saying “bottle” we say “boʼel” where the ʻtʼ
sound is replaced by a tightening restrictive block on the vowel. In the new texts for
recitation, appearing in the Simplybeing website, this blocked sound is indicated by the
symbol <.
